A large rare and most impressive Art Deco period American historical theatre ornamental usher signage wall panel.
Important, museum quality, United States, circa 1930s, standing 6.5ft tall, authentic salvaged interior theatrical architecture / scenic design set piece mural painting bas relief wooden panel, usher figure, the artwork in period American scene painting Regionalism style.
Created during a time in history known as the Golden Age of both classic Hollywood film and American cinema, when technological advancements, unparalleled creativity, innovation, popularity and profits turned simple small theaters and vaudeville stages into lavish palatial scale elaborately decorated architectural masterpieces.
This monumental, larger than life-size ornamental sculptural panel most likely originated as a functional decorative interior wall set piece, placed at the auditorium entrance, giving moviegoers instruction about where to line up and wait for the ushers to take them to their seat. Unique scenery artwork that satisfied both aesthetic and practical criteria.
Exceptionally executed realistic rendering, the hand carved polychrome painted sculptural wooden panel depicts a theater attendant in formal uniform holding a "Queue Here Please" sign, with projecting elements, the face, hands, and feet in high relief, with integral molded parcel gilt frame.
Visually striking, interesting, and unusual, for added dramatic effect and presence the highly skilled artist employed various illusionistic techniques, including perspective, undercutting, varied depth, matte contrast, and naturalistic realism, drawing viewers in with its lifelike presence, distorting spatial perception, and giving the impression the sculpture is going to jump off the wall!
Today, it would make for a truly fascinating and highly decorative home theater / media room wall art, whimsical hall accent, playful backdrop for pictures, or treasured as original American folk art!
