What characterizes the rug from the Aït Zemmour tribe is the usage of a different set of geometric motifs on a natural colored area that use only a few main colors. The weavers use geometric motifs to decorate their rugs, but most importantly, they use this art as a form of expression of their own stories, hopes, secrets and dreams that they cannot express verbally. Every single motif has a symbolic significance and tells a story of its own. There are ten different tribes in the Zemmours. The name of Zemmours comes from the Berber word ”Azemmur”, which means olive. Before settling in their current location in northwestern Morocco, they were originally nomadic or semi-nomadic and pastoral tribes moving on the low plateaus to the north and west of the Middle Atlas Mountains, suitable for livestock and agriculture.
