Highly original and very attractive 19th C. Southern American Pie Safe / Cabinet.
Two door, six panel style, with four inside sections from three solid shelves.
Artisan crafted, likely North Carolina, with significant age and patina.
Still sturdy and suitable for use or gallery display.
Antique Mustard yellow paint finish on what appears to be previous layers of green and rust red.
Iron closures and hinges.
14 board back, on four square feet. Square and round head nails confirm age and likely pedigree of rural agricultural use.
51.5" wide, 16" deep, 47.5" tall, with a 5" rise from the ground.
In keeping with Aesop's fable, Fox and Crow's Motto is "Beware of False Flattery!" So, with each listing we offer a true confession about the item...
We appreciate the colors, construction and "honestly" of vernacular, primitive furniture a great deal.
But, we avoid it because it often does not fit our model of antiques / heirlooms which a collector can enjoy in every day life.
However, when we discovered this piece - with a very trusted old friend known for incredible and often primitive "barn finds" - we froze in our tracks.
This is - all at once - a proper antique, honest regional furniture, amazing to look at, and potentially useful, with a little care, every day.
The Paint! Mustard yellow on very old green and rust red?! Perfect!
The Size - large enough to be a statement piece but not too large for a modern cottage!
The Originality - patinated planks, square head nails, iron fixtures, mesh door and side coverings!
Our suggestion with this would be not to touch it, except to add a glass "table top" so it could be a display - or even a buffet - in a fabulous kitchen, breakfast area, or porch.
Originally only comes along so often, and this wonderful Southern American piece has it.
We have not yet placed it in one of our homes because I'm afraid if we did...it would never leave.
Grab it while you can - you won't see another quite like this one!

Hinges and closures work well, legs and stance are sturdy. Top and center of cabinet have a slight "bow" from age - but it simply confirms the originality of the piece. less
