From markings on back … Read more A set of four antique German miniature paintings of the Four Apostles…..Mathew, Mark, Luke and John. From markings on back paintings are dated to 1886. Painted in black and white on heavy paper board. They measure 4 7/8” x 3 ¾”. Frames are gold and original.
Within the first few centuries of Christianity, evangelist came to refer almost exclusively to the men that we call the Four Evangelists—that is, the authors of the four canonical gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
Condition: two paintings have minor damage to upper corner that can be restored, otherwise in good condition for age; see photos.
