Essays and letters of the Stoic philosopher and playwright Lucius Annaeus Seneca, published at a time of increased interest in the ancient philosopher. Translations into English had started at least by 1547, but flowered with Jasper Haywood's translation of the plays (1581) and Arthur Golden's version of the prose works in 1577-78.
