Rare and important pair of Japanese Meji period lacquered wood trays, each of a rounded rectangular form, and decorated on a nashiji lacquer ground with a Ho-o bird in flight over a leafy kiri branch, all accented with gold and red details, Circa 1880-1910.
The bird depicted is a Ho-o (in Chinese: Feng Huang) which represents fire, the sun, fidelity, justice and more, and is often called the Asian Phoenix. The red pigment used in the leaves is vibrant and eye catching.
The large tray measures approximately; 26.5 inches length, 18 inches width, 3 inches depth. The small tray measures: 25 inches length, 16.75 width, 3 inches depth.
