About the maker: The Minton Company was founded in Stoke in 1793, and became the foremost ceramic factory in Europe in the Victorian era and today continues to enjoy a reputation as a leading producer of English bone china. Among the innovations introduced by the Company were pâte-sur-pâte , acid gold decoration, Parian, encaustic tiles and Majolica.
Majolica was developed at Minton from 1849 by Leon Arnoux and was first exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Minton Majolica, the brightly coloured glazed ware was named after the island of Majorca, and was divided into two categories, naturalistic and revivalist. Revivalist wares were serious reproductions of Italian Majolica and naturalistic Majolica was based on animal, vegetable, fruit, flower and marine forms. It was these naturalistic models, their complex modelling painted with rich glazes, which held the wides appeal, and this style was used for decorating a variety of products -0 from plates to dishes, teapots to garden furniture.
The monkey teapot produced in c.1860 is probably the most well-known and best loved of all the humorous teapots produced by Minton throughout the Victorian era. Its design included a removable head which forms the lid and the Bicentenary limited edition model of 1,793 copies, faithfully follow the original style.
The originality and the humour of the designs such as the 'Monkey' teapot made Minton Majolica the most exciting form of ceramics.
