Has very light coat of polyurethane water based, which could be converted into a thicker high gloss, or highly polished, or anything, if one was so inclined, I chose to just leave it natural as possible. Hopefully you like it too. People seem to tell me a lot that they think its a good looking piece, or cute, or beautiful, is a delicate piece, for looks, not so much for putting heavy things on, its good with small book, or keys, or decoration this item is very very light and can easily be shipped or picked up locally less
