Rare Pair of 19th Century Chinese Export Famille Rose Porcelain Vases with Roosters, Flowers & Insects – Matching Set on Wood Stands
Description:
Discover this exquisite and rare matching pair of antique 19th-century Chinese porcelain vases, masterfully hand-painted in the vibrant Famille Rose palette. Crafted during the Qing Dynasty (likely mid-to-late 1800s), these export-grade beauties feature a luminous pale green (celadon-like) with white ground that beautifully offsets the vivid polychrome enamels.
Each vase is lavishly decorated with lively scenes of nature: proud roosters and hens strutting amid blooming flowers, lush foliage, clusters of berries, and scattered insects including dragonflies, grasshoppers, and beetles. The intricate details capture the elements and symbolism of traditional Chinese motifs—roosters often represent good fortune, courage, and punctuality, while the abundant flora and ruyi design evokes prosperity, longevity and harmony.
Adding to their elegance are applied relief handles in the form of mythical creature, lion-like masks (chilong or taotie-inspired), each grasping a movable ring for a touch of sculptural drama. The flared trumpet necks are edged in red, complementing the overall palette of pinks, greens, yellows, blues, and russets.
These substantial vases measure approximately 14 1/2" in height (to the rim) x 8" in diameter at the widest point, with an overall height of 18 3/4" including their original decorative wooden stands featuring intricate openwork and curved legs in a rich reddish-brown finish.
A truly decorative and collectible set—perfect for flanking a mantel, console, or entryway in a chinoiserie, traditional, or eclectic interior. Very good condition for its age, minor imperfections with no chips, cracks, or repairs.
A standout pair for antique porcelain enthusiasts—rare to find such a thematic, well-matched duo with this charming avian and entomological motif!
