Bellesi, catalog of florentine painters of the 17th and 18th centuries, vol. Ii p. 303, photo 666, probably the same painting presented at auction on 7 july 2023 by sotheby's in london. Franchi trained in painting with giovan domenico ferretti and later with matteo boselli. Later, he attended pietro paolini's nude academy and became interested in the great examples of emilian and roman painting from his city. Marchó from lucca to florence, where i can enter the talleres of felice ficherelli and baldassarre franceschini, known as "il volterrano". He returned to his hometown and continued his activity as a painter, demonstrating the influence of the city of volterra and vincenzo dandini. Finally, he returned to florence to live there permanently. He became established among the masters of the time, thanks to his intelligence and stylistic ductility, which allowed him to adopt and transcribe according to his own hearing the neo-venetian ways of coli-gherardi, the cortona ones through ciro ferri and the models of dolci thanks to onorio sailors. Upon the death of giusto sustermans, he occupied the position of the nordic master as a portraitist of the court of the doctors. Franchi's latest production highlights the elegant classicalism of maratta, following the estela of florentine classical artists such as anton domenico gabbiani.
