The face is rendered in a minimal style, with simple eyes and a small red mouth. The body is stained red, showing a lively wood grain and a subtly carved floral motif.

A strong decorative object with clear maker’s character and plenty of presence.

Yamanaka Sanpei was born in Yamagata and worked in the sōsaku (creative) kokeshi tradition throughout his career. His work is sought after by collectors worldwide; in 1979 he received the prestigious Prime Minister Award.

Condition: very good, with an attractive wood grain. Signed by the artist on the base. See less
