An exquisite male portrait of a young nobleman, this etching dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. The work depicts a young man, whose identity is unknown, turned slightly to the right in a three-quarter view, adding dynamism and depth to the composition. The figure, with an elegant and serene bearing, wears a black high-collared garment, following the fashion of the last decades of the 19th century. The drawing is delicately framed in a small oval paper frame, which highlights the fineness of the linework. The entire composition is protected by a gilded wooden frame, richly ornamented with delicate vegetal details and beautiful rocaille motifs distributed in the corners, accentuating the edges with undulating lines, which lends the whole a sense of sophistication and visual harmony.
The 19th century has sometimes been called "The Century of the Portrait." from its very inception, the portrait was associated with figures endowed with economic, social, or political power that they wished to display and perpetuate, but it experienced its golden age during the 19th century, especially during the last third, as it became a coveted form of distinction among those who could afford it. It spread to all kinds of techniques: painting, sculpture, medal making, miniatures, watercolor, drawing, etching, lithography, photography… Moreover, the influence of photography and the artistic movement toward realism led to portraits being depicted with ever-increasing naturalism.
The frame protecting the artwork is offered as a gift, but it has intrinsic value. It is provided at no additional cost so that your artwork can be displayed immediately upon arrival at your home or destination. Any damage to the frame itself that does not affect the integrity of the artwork cannot be accepted as a valid reason for filing a claim or requesting a cancellation.
