Royal Heraldry Meets Hand-Painted Florals — A Piece That Owns Every Room It Enters… Some pieces stop you in your tracks. This was one of them.
Discovered on our annual pilgrimage to the Paris flea markets — where we go to buy, eat, and smile — this magnificent P.L. France footed porcelain urn carries something most decorative pieces simply don't: genuine royal iconography with centuries of history baked into every brushstroke.
The Crest
Look closely and you'll find the Royal Arms of the French Bourbon monarchy — azure field bearing three fleurs-de-lis Or, surmounted by the royal crown and encircled by an elaborate gilt cartouche. Suspended beneath the shield is what appears to be the cross of the Ordre du Saint-Esprit — the Order of the Holy Spirit — the highest chivalric order of the French Crown, established by Henri III in 1578 and reserved for the kingdom's most exalted nobility. This isn't decorative heraldry invented for effect. This is the real iconography of French royal power, rendered on porcelain with extraordinary care and precision.
The Object
Standing 10 inches tall, the urn commands the room from every angle. The armorial panel dominates one face with regal authority — cobalt, gold, and crown in perfect hierarchy. Turn it and you're met with an equally glorious explosion of hand-painted pink peonies and flowering vines — lush, joyful, and utterly French. There is no back to hide. This piece performs from every direction.
Sweeping gilt handles flank the body with sculptural drama. Cobalt and gold banding anchors the flared rim and plinth. The square base is detailed in blue and gold, grounding the whole composition with classical confidence. The underside bears a handwritten "Made in France" mark alongside a decorative maker's cartouche — the quiet signature of a serious French porcelain house working in the grand Limoges tradition.
The Condition
Seemingly in very good order save for gold rub to the handles — which, as any seasoned collector knows, is often the case with pieces of this age and character. It only adds to the authenticity.
The Story
P.L. France produced fine decorative porcelain in the tradition of the great 19th-century French manufacturers — pieces made not merely to be pretty but to mean something. This urn, with its Bourbon royal arms and Order of the Holy Spirit pendant, was made to communicate prestige, history, and an unbroken line of French aesthetic ambition. It arrived in a Paris flea market stall on a cold winter morning. Now it's looking for the room it deserves.
