A striking hand-blown Murano art glass vase, crafted in Italy by skilled artisans, featuring rich amber honey-toned glass infused with shimmering gold-flecked aventurine. This vase has a graceful silhouette that rises into a gently flared, smooth lip. The dimensions are 10" in diameter by 8.5" high, and it was created in the mid-twentieth century (1960's).
Aventurine, as its name suggests, is glass decorated with aventitius surface effects resembling the shining flecks of natural quartz, copper, and gold. It revives a seventeenth-century technique invented in Murano (Venice) by accident—"all'avventura"—when, according to legend, a glassmaker accidentally dropped metal shavings into a molten mixture, creating sparkling, metallic copper crystals.
