Antique 19th Century Jugendstil Chromolithograph – Woodland Grouse Pair
In Antique Mission / Craftsman Oak Frame
Offered is a beautifully preserved late-19th-century German Jugendstil chromolithograph depicting a pair of woodland grouse in a richly detailed forest setting.
The composition is strikingly romantic — the male stands elevated upon a mossed stump, alert and watchful, while the female forages below among autumn leaves and berries. The scene is framed within an elegant flowing Art Nouveau arch, typical of European decorative portfolios of the 1890s.
The coloration remains remarkably fresh and vivid: warm umbers, olive greens, soft creams and muted berries — all layered in classic chromolithographic depth. When turned gently in the light, the surface retains a subtle period sheen consistent with 19th-century lithographic printing on smooth paper.
Age
Circa 1890–1900
(German Jugendstil decorative plate)
Condition
The print presents beautifully.
There is very slight historic lifting from old mounting at the center which creates a faint ripple under close inspection. It does not distract when framed and is barely noticeable in normal display. Colors are strong, margins clean, no foxing, no major flaws.
Frame
Housed in an antique Mission / Craftsman style oak frame with new backing paper that complements the warmth and earth-tone palette of the artwork. The pairing feels cohesive and appropriate to the era — a wonderful decorative presentation.
Dimensions
Image approximately 7 ¾” x 11 ¾”
(Frame measurements approximately 18x12)
The print remains in excellent antique condition. There is very slight, age-appropriate lifting from historic mounting which creates a faint surface ripple visible under close inspection. It does not distract in display and is barely noticeable when framed.
