In a process similar to cameo glass, each vase began as a simple blown-glass form, which was then repeatedly dipped into liquid glass to create layers of white and yellow color. The outer layers were then carved away in a process called "yellow cut to white," revealing a bas-relief scene of two koi fish leaping out of the water. Etched with fine scales and crashing waves, this motif of leaping carp is a common rebus for success or promotion.
