This bust is a sculpture of a young lady by the noted Italian artist Arnoldo Giannelli. It is often referred to by names like "Angelica Maria".
Beautiful vintage classical-style female bust, inspired by 19th-century works or ancient Greek and Roman sculptures that were popular during that era.
The sculpture is made from a composite material of alabaster, marble powder, and resin, sitting on a contrasting black base.
The figure depicts a young woman with wavy hair gathered into ringlets over her shoulders, wearing a draped garment with spaghetti straps and rosette detailing. Her facial expression is serene with downcast eyes.
The bust has an antiqued white or ivory finish and is mounted on a separate, round, ebonised (black) base.
Nice vintage conditions with minor signs of authentic patina.
Arnaldo Giannelli was born in 1907 in Volterra, Italy, a city known for its alabaster. He studied at the Royal School of Art and opened his own studio in 1944. from 1953 to 1961, he served as the president of the Alabaster Craftsmen Guild.
In Volterra, Giannelli founded a factory named Egregia, which continues to operate under the management of his family. It is known for its high-quality alabaster and composite stone products.
Materials: While Giannelli worked with pure alabaster, many of the more widely available sculptures signed "A. Giannelli" are made from a composite of alabaster, marble powder, and resin.
Notable commissions include a bust of Dwight D. Eisenhower, for which he received a personal thank you, and a three-meter totem for Boston University. In 1970, Giannelli was awarded the title of "Cavaliere della Republica" for his artistic achievements.
