Formerly Gaslight – Electrified – Provenance Amsterdam Townhouse

An exceptional and authentic 19th-century French chandelier, originally designed for gas illumination and later professionally converted to electricity while preserving its original architectural integrity.

What distinguishes this piece is the presence of the original, finely crafted gas taps, still intact on each arm — a rare and highly desirable detail confirming its true gas-period origin. These elegant valves are beautifully ornamented and remain visible as part of the design, offering both historical depth and decorative refinement.

The frame is richly executed and appears to be fire-gilt bronze (ormolu) or gold-leaf gilded metal, displaying a warm, deep patina with subtle wear consistent with age. The craftsmanship and detailing suggest a Parisian atelier, circa 1865–1885.

The chandelier is adorned with high-quality hand-cut crystal, including long spear prisms and faceted crystal spheres, creating exceptional light refraction and brilliance. The proportions are elegant and refined — characteristic of transitional gas-to-electric period lighting.

Removed from a stately townhouse in the Amsterdam region, where it served as a central salon fixture.
