Pair of armchairs, carved and polychromed wood, zebra print upholstery, louis xv, circa 1790 – france
spectacular pair of french à la reine armchairs in the louis xv style and period, upholstered with an original and elegant zebra print. The frame, made of carved and polychromed wood in an off-white tone, features sinuous lines in its cabriole legs, which end in a small scroll, curved arms, and an undulating molding that runs along the entire frame. The à la reine model is distinguished by its straight back, designed to provide greater poise and comfort. The à la reine armchair is a type of seat characteristic of 18th-century french furniture, associated from its beginnings with the louis xv style. It is distinguished by its straight back (unlike the cabriolet, which has a curved back), open arms, and cabriole-shaped curved legs. It was a parlor chair, designed for high-society women, combining elegance and comfort.
delicate floral and vegetal carvings adorn the wood, subtly outlining the backrest, which is topped with a shield, as well as the arms and the seat valance. The most striking feature is the zebra-print upholstery, reminiscent of the designs of classic american designer ralph lauren, a lover of these combinations, making them truly covetable pieces.
the resulting aesthetic can be interpreted as suitable for a refined english setting, a library, or an office, as well as for creating more exotic spaces. A great opportunity to acquire period pieces with an intrinsic spirit of sophistication and refinement.
