The Oude Kerk, also known as the Oude Jan (Old John) or Crooked Jan (Slanting John), is one of the two large old churches in Delft. The other large old church in Delft is the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church). Dating back to 1246, the Oude Kerk is the oldest church in Delft. A characteristic feature of the Oude Kerk is its leaning tower. The Oude Kerk is still in use as a church. The city fire of Delft in 1536 and the iconoclasms of 1566 and 1573 significantly disrupted its construction. Only the pulpit from 1548 survived these difficult times. The Oude Kerk underwent two major restorations in the 20th century, between 1949 and 1961 and again between 1997 and 2000. This tile commemorates the completion of the 1961 restoration by the Board of Churchwardens of the Reformed Church. Approximately four hundred people are buried in this church, including Piet Hein and Maarten Tromp, the sailor, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, the scientist, and Johannes Vermeer, the painter. The tile shows crackle. refers to a network of fine hairline cracks in a top layer, such as in pottery, paintings, varnish, leather, or car paint. It is caused by aging, drying, or shrinkage, but is sometimes also deliberately applied as a decorative, antique effect (cracking).
