This elegant sofa, model 1741 with armrests, was designed in 1967 by Coen de Vries for the Dutch furniture company Gispen. A designer and manufacturer internationally renowned for their functional, progressive, and timeless approach to modern design. De Vries played a key role in shaping post-war Dutch modernism, which emphasized comfort, industrial techniques, and clean lines. The sofa has a sleek and balanced silhouette with a chromed steel frame, warm wooden armrests, and generously upholstered seat and back cushions surrounded by upholstered sheet steel. The interplay of metal, wood, and textile is characteristic of the mid-century modern style: light in appearance, honest in its use of materials, and designed with functionality in mind. The subtle luxury of this period lies in its simplicity, without unnecessary ornamentation. The sofa was recently reupholstered by its previous owners in a soft, velvety green fabric.
