Born into the Acoma Pueblo and inspired by his grandmother, the late master potter Santana Cerno, Vallo began making pottery at age twenty, learning the traditional methods of coiling, shaping, painting, and outdoor firing passed down through generations. His family lineage is a distinguished one that includes Santana Cerno, Eva Histia, Joseph and Barbara Cerno, and Ergil Vallo.

The jar’s classic Acoma form—broad-shouldered with a gently tapering neck—provides a dynamic surface for Vallo’s finely executed designs. Painted in natural pigments of black and warm red against a creamy white ground, the composition features stylized deer and bird motifs framed within bold geometric banding.
