This precious little cabinet vase is a charming example of Japanese Satsuma pottery, dating from the Late Meiji to Taisho period, roughly 1895–1915.
Identification
Style: Satsuma. The vase features the classic cream-colored earthenware base and heavy "moriage" (raised, jewel-like dots of enamel).
Region: This is often referred to as "Export Satsuma," created specifically for Western markets during Japan's opening to the world.
Subject Matter: It depicts Buddhist Disciples, known as the "1000 Immortals" or Lohans". These figures are a hallmark of Satsuma ware, usually shown with serene expressions and elaborate robes adorned with geometric patterns.
Visual Description
Body & Form: A classic baluster shape with a flared rim and a slightly tapered neck. Its dimensions (2.5" wide and 6.0" high) suggest it was intended as a decorative cabinet piece.
Decoration:
The Figures: The hand-painted figures wear robes in a palette of iron red, blue, and black, accented with gold.
The Patterns: The "background" is filled with intricate diaper patterns (geometric repetitions), stylized fans, and clouds.
The Enamel: You can see heavy white and gold "dots" throughout the collar and the robes; this is the moriage technique, which gives the piece a tactile, 3D texture.
The Base: The bottom is "unfinished" or unglazed (the "biscuit"), which is standard for this type of earthenware. It is unmarked, which is common for export pieces of this era.
This vase is in very good original condition, commensurate with its age. No cracks, breaks or repairs are visible under the black light.
