This one-of-a-kind statement piece, a hand-blown jack-in-the-pulpit art glass vase by Azerbaijani artist Essie Zareh stands an impressive 17¼ inches tall and 8¼ inches wide, with a commanding sculptural presence that changes dramatically as it is viewed from different angles. Zareh is recognized for his expressive, hand-formed vessels that blend traditional Azerbaijani glassmaking with contemporary studio techniques, often emphasizing fluid movement, dramatic flared rims, and complex, layered color transitions. His work focuses on the natural behavior of molten glass, allowing form and surface to feel organic and alive rather than rigid or mechanical.
The vase begins with a broad, substantial base that feels grounded and weighty. It is marbled with swirling tones of olive green, soft white, and muted purples, creating a fluid, almost stone-like pattern. The coloration is not flat but textured and layered, with gentle waves and subtle variations that reveal themselves as the light shifts across the surface. From this foundation, the body rises in a tall, tapering sweep, narrowing and then opening outward at the rim.
The signature jack-in-the-pulpit profile is defined by a ruffled white edge that flares outward like a petal caught mid-unfurling. This crisp, lighter rim outlines the silhouette and contrasts beautifully against the deeper tones below. The upper section transitions into a rich, deep dark reddish brown interior with pronounced ribbed and pleated texture radiating from the central opening. The ribbing appears almost as if the glass were still twisting upward when it cooled, giving the piece a sense of captured motion. The darker interior adds depth and drama, drawing the eye inward and enhancing the sculptural quality of the form.
