This striking wool wall tapestry by Jean-Claude Bissery showcases a bold, autumnal composition rendered in rich ochres, reds, browns, and deep black accents. Woven on a Jacquard loom using the refined “point princesse” technique, the design reveals remarkable depth, structure, and vibrancy.
Signed in the lower right corner, the piece measures an impressive 183 cm wide by 83 cm high, making it ideal as a statement artwork above a sofa or bed. Hooks on the reverse allow for immediate wall installation. Its dense wool weave also makes it suitable for use as a decorative rug.
About the Artist
Jean-Claude Bissery (born in 1930) was a French painter and textile artist active in the second half of the 20th century. He served as a professor at the École Nationale d’Art Décoratif in Aubusson during the 1960s and 1970s — a significant position within one of France’s most historically important centers of tapestry production.
Aubusson, long synonymous with French woven art, has been internationally recognized for its tapestry tradition for centuries. Bissery’s involvement in this academic and artistic environment situates his work within that lineage of French decorative excellence.
His tapestries reflect the strong tradition of figurative and decorative design associated with the region, combining stylized natural motifs with bold, graphic composition. Works woven on Jacquard looms using techniques such as point princesse demonstrate both technical rigor and compositional clarity — qualities that sustain their decorative authority and enduring appeal today.
