A monumental Mid-Century American swung art glass floor vase in authentic cranberry (gold ruby) glass, standing an impressive 32 inches in height.
This hand-blown example features elongated optic ribbing drawn during the reheating and swinging process, resulting in a subtly asymmetrical vertical form that captures and refracts light across its full length. The body tapers into a manually opened six-point star foot, creating a sculptural base that provides both stability and dramatic visual presence.
Executed using an optic mold prior to stretch, the ribbed pattern has been expanded through controlled furnace manipulation — a hallmark of true swung glass production. The underside retains a snapped and fire-polished pontil mark, confirming hand-finished studio work rather than pressed or fully molded manufacture.
The cranberry coloration displays natural tonal attenuation toward the neck, a characteristic effect of extended hot stretching in gold-ruby batch glass. At this scale, the piece functions less as a conventional vessel and more as a freestanding decorative object suitable for floor placement, entryway staging, or large-format arrangement.
Unmarked; attributed to LE Smith Glass Company (Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania), circa late 1960s–1970s, based on form, optic treatment, and foot articulation consistent with documented production from the period.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition. No cracks or repairs observed. Base points intact. Minor wear to pontil area consistent with age and display use.
A rare example of oversized Mid-Century swung glass, ideal for interior environments seeking vertical sculptural emphasis.
