This exceptional 19th-century French Empire bibliothèque (bookcase) is a sophisticated example of Neoclassical design, perfectly scaled for versatile placement. Standing at a desirable "pier height" of 55 inches, it is topped with its original, substantial slab of Petit Granit marble—a Belgian/French fossiliferous limestone prized for its deep charcoal hue and subtle, natural inclusions.
The architectural frame is crafted from richly figured mahogany and is anchored by two glass-fronted doors featuring original hand-blown glass with its characteristic light-catching waviness.
Key Design Highlights:
Neoclassical Ormolu: The stiles are adorned with magnificent Empire Caryatids—gilded bronze female busts that transition into columnar supports and terminate in unique, highly detailed sandaled brass feet.
Symbolic Mounts: The upper frieze features a central floral medallion flanked by stately lion-head ring pulls, a hallmark of the French Empire period's power and symmetry.
Superior Cabinetry: The interior houses adjustable shelving supported by traditional wooden sawtooth ratchets, allowing for customizable display heights.
Substantial Base: The piece is elevated on bold, black-lacquered claw feet that provide a grounded, masculine contrast to the elegant mahogany.

The mahogany veneer displays character-rich chipping on the upper frieze corners—authentic "honesty marks" that confirm its 19th-century origin without compromising the piece's integrity. The marble top is intact with a beautiful honed finish. The brass and bronze elements retain a deep, original patina. Original sawtooth adjustable shelving is fully functional. less
