Carved in richly toned grey serpentine/soapstone with natural veining and organic inclusions, the piece carries both sculptural weight and cultural resonance. The seated figure wears a traditional parka with hood and cradles the seal upright in both arms. The seal’s rounded body and incised facial details contrast with the steady, grounded presence of the hunter, creating a compact and harmonious composition. The simplified forms and softly modeled surfaces are characteristic of mid-to-late 20th century Inuit carving. Based on material and stylistic qualities, the work likely originates from either the Nunavut region (including communities such as Kinngait/Cape Dorset) or Nunavik in Northern Quebec (including communities such as Inukjuak or Povungnituk)—areas known for producing expressive figural carvings in dark Arctic stone during the 1960s–1980s. Unsigned, with what appear to be later inventory numbers to the base. A strong and authentic example of Canadian Arctic Inuit sculpture, reflecting themes of survival, respect for wildlife, and the enduring relationship between hunter and seal. See less
