The Piece
This stunning original oil on canvas captures the quintessential "Golden Age" of Hawaiian travel. Painted by noted Honolulu artist James J. Takara (1914–1996), the work depicts the iconic Matson Line flagship, the SS Lurline, as it rounds Diamond Head. This was the legendary "Boat Day" scene that signaled the beginning of a tropical vacation for thousands of mid-century travelers.
The Artist
James J. Takara was a dedicated chronicler of Hawaiian maritime history. While other members of the Takara family leaned toward abstract expressionism, James specialized in representational realism, making his work highly prized by Hawaiiana and maritime collectors for its historical accuracy and nostalgic soul.
The Frame
The painting is housed in its original, vintage Gold Faux Bamboo Frame. This "Hollywood Regency" style is currently a top choice for high-end interior designers, perfectly complementing "Grandmillennial" or "Palm Beach" aesthetics. The frame’s warm gold finish provides a sophisticated contrast to the deep blues and whites of the Pacific sea and sky.
