“Yucatan” is a limited-edition tapestry executed after a design (carton) by Louis Toffoli and produced by the distinguished Manufacture Robert Four, Paris–Aubusson. Numbered 341 from an edition of 580, this example retains its original workshop label on the reverse. Most likely produced circa 1975–1985, it belongs to the important post-war movement in which leading modern painters collaborated with Aubusson ateliers to translate contemporary painting into textile form.
Executed as a hand-screen printing “heart of wool” (sérigraphie à la main “à cœur de laine”), the work exemplifies Toffoli’s mature visual language. Faithful to his characteristic style, he employs subtle transparencies and layered superpositions to suggest movement and depth. The composition appears to float within a timeless space — poised between modernity and tradition — where form dissolves gently into atmosphere.
The subject reflects Toffoli’s enduring preoccupation with the human condition. Monumental yet intimate figures emerge in rhythmic balance, their simplified contours and luminous tonal planes conveying both structural clarity and emotional resonance. The chromatic intensity — especially the deep, enveloping blues contrasted with warm accents — reinforces the contemplative stillness of the scene while suggesting an inner vibrancy beneath the surface.
About Louis Toffoli
Louis Toffoli (1907–1999) was a French painter of Italian birth, born in Trieste to an Italian father and a Slovenian mother. He settled in France and became associated with the School of Paris. Throughout his career, Toffoli remained deeply committed to a personal and instinctive artistic path. Rather than following prevailing trends, he pursued authenticity and emotional truth, refusing compromise in his vision.
Recognized for his distinctive use of color and radiant light, Toffoli’s work evokes strong emotional responses through disciplined simplicity. Inspired by human gestures and landscapes shaped by lived experience, his compositions communicate profound truths with quiet authority. His approach has often been compared to chamber music: restrained yet expressive, each element carefully balanced to create immediate emotional connection.
Toffoli exhibited internationally during his lifetime, and retrospective exhibitions continue to reaffirm his place within 20th-century modern expression. His collaborations with Aubusson workshops such as Robert Four situate his work within the broader narrative of modern French decorative arts, where fine art and textile tradition intersect.
Manufacture Robert Four, one of the leading Aubusson workshops of the 20th century, played a significant role in preserving the region’s tapestry heritage while engaging contemporary artists. Works produced by the atelier remain valued for both craftsmanship and historical relevance.
The tapestry is fitted with a wooden hanging bar and original fixation elements and is ready to install.
