This antique oil painting on canvas, signed Lewis L. Shonborn (1852–1931) at lower right and painted circa 1880, depicts two horses standing quietly in an expansive Western landscape. A chestnut and a pale gray horse rest side by side on a sandy plain, set before distant rolling hills beneath a luminous sky washed in lilac, rose, and pale gold. Elongated shadows and soft tonal transitions create a calm, atmospheric composition characteristic of late 19th century equestrian landscape painting.
Shonborn was an American artist known for his horse paintings and rural subjects. Born in Iowa, he later studied in France, and his work reflects a strong European influence, particularly the tonal harmony and atmospheric restraint associated with the Barbizon school. His equestrian works are sought after for their decorative appeal and naturalistic sensitivity.
The palette is composed of warm ochres, dusty browns, muted mauves, and soft blues, emphasizing mood and light rather than strict detail. Subtle impasto in the sky and delicate layering in the horses’ coats add depth and painterly texture.
The painting is presented in its original, highly decorative carved giltwood frame in the Napoleon III taste, richly ornamented with acanthus scrolls, shell motifs, floral cartouches, and draped swags in deep relief. The warm gilded finish enhances the romantic character of the landscape and provides strong visual presence.
The canvas remains in excellent antique condition commensurate with age and use, with light surface wear consistent with period.
An elegant example of 19th century American equestrian art with European influence, this antique painting would make a refined addition to a study, ranch home, or traditional interior.
