The fact that this piece is at least 130 years old and in such marvelous condition, has something to say about the quality of this jug. The thing that is most unusual and clever about this piece, is that the body of the piece, really does look like tooled leather. It is indeed stoneware made for In actuality, it's a barely perceptible glaze, with a matte finish, known as a "smear". It is also referred to as Leatherware and Siliconware. In person looking at it, you really cannot tell that it is not true leather. There is "stitching" at the base and up the sides that give an authenticity to the piece. This piece is a wonderful example of the expertise the craftsman used to create such interesting pieces. The copper banding and handle compliment the look. The rim is sterling silver with the proper stamps, CS PS, a lion, a lion head and a shield. They were more than likely hallmarked in London. Additional stamps and marks on underside, Doulton Lambeth Silicon England, no. 157999, 2843, qqq. Siliconware was a high fire stoneware that's peak was 11880-1912. This piece measures 10.04" tall x 5.75"wide at base x 5" top of rim to handle. Because of the limited production of this design, these pieces are few and far between and would make an excellent addition to any Doulton collection. The condition of the piece is excellent. See less
