19th-century Swedish pine cabinet secretary featuring its original hand-painted rosemaling in traditional earth tones. The upper crown is painted and dated 1840, and the faux wood background throughout reflects the decorative style of the period. The desktop rests on two extending arms and opens to reveal three interior drawers on each side of the central cubby. The upper interior is painted a light blue green, likely a later finish, and includes a notched half shelf originally intended to display family silver spoons. The lower cabinet interior is painted in the same tone.
Keys are included with the original locks, most of which function, although the lower cabinet door lock operates very stiffly. The buyer may choose to use the key as a pull only. Typical age-related cracks and surface distress to the painted finish are visible throughout. This secretary has been restored, is strong, stable, and ready for use. A classic example of Swedish country craftsmanship, reminiscent of the Dalarna region.
