Representing the month … Read more One of twelve in a series of Belgian Medieval jacquard wall tapestries depicting the "Hunts of Maximilian." Representing the month of March with a center top roundel of a ram, the colorful scene is bursting with activity including multiple episodes of various characters capturing a moment in time.

The springtime scene takes place in the Sonian Forest, south of Brussels, with Emperor Charles V as the central figure leading the stag hunt with hounds in pursuit. The background features a detailed, identifiable panorama of Brussels including the Coudenberg Palace, town hall and the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula. Various nobles including falconers with birds of prey and dog handlers are amongst the lush landscape full of foliage and forest verdure.

A spectacular, intricate scene that will captivate one's eye invoking wonderment and transform a room with sophisticated warmth. This work has an advanced Renaissance compositional style with an expansive landscape behind the many active human figures along with animals arranged realistically within the scene both near and far.

The original was likely designed by Bernard van Orley around 1530 and is housed along with the entire series at the Louvre in Paris. Tapestry is fully lined with rod tunnel for hanging. See less
