Carved wood form with a removable, slightly arched lid and original fitted interior tray. The chest is built in layered red lacquer with raised thayo relief and retains substantial mirror inlay throughout. Narrative figural panels from the Buddhist canon encircle the body, set within a dense lattice ground. The lid is centered with a deeply modeled hintha bird framed by scrolling foliate work.

The original gilt has worn naturally over time, remaining strongest within the recesses and relief, creating tonal depth and surface variation consistent with age. The red lacquer has developed a rich, oxidized character. Relief carving remains dimensional and intact, with strong definition across the panels.

The lid lifts fully off and is not hinged. The interior tray remains present and properly fitted. Underside surfaces of the lid, tray, and base are shown in photographs.

A substantial and cohesive example of Burmese manuscript chest form, retaining its original interior components and presenting with strong surface character throughout. See less
