A delicate figural study by this well-listed and exhibited French Post-Impressionist who made California his adopted home.

Born in Bourbonnais, Etienne Ret (American, 1900-1996) graduated from the College of Mesnieres and completed military service in 1924. He then began formal art training in Paris in the ateliers of Maurice Denis and Georges Desvallieres, and furthered his education at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. He exhibited with success in London and Paris before settling in Hollywood in 1934. He taught at the Chouinard Art School and continued to exhibit in Los Angeles through the late 1950s. A member of the California Watercolor Society, Etienne Ret was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards and exhibited widely and with success, including at the De Young Museum, 1943 (self-portrait). His work is held in the permanent collections of numerous California Museums including the San Diego Museum, the De Young Museum the Pasadena Art Institute and the Santa Barbara Museum. See less
