Original silkscreen print by Steve Wheeler from the limited edition of 513 monograph "Hello Steve" published in 1947. Each print in "Hello Steve" was based on a gouache painting and produced by a photo silk-screen process, where a photograph of the gouache was taken to create the screen used for printing. As such, the inks are rich, thick and tactile. Sheet size: 9-7/8 x 12-7/8 inches; print size: 7-7/8 x 10-1/2 inches, on colored, heavyweight Schlosser paper with a deckle edge. Included with the silkscreen print is the title page; the Colophon pages are shown for authentication purposes and not included. Mint condition new old stock from our complete copy of "Hello Steve". This silkscreen is from a rare, unnumbered non-commerce copy, which explains its remarkable condition.
Steve Wheeler (1912–1992) was an Slovakian-American painter, printmaker and author, best known for blending abstraction with imagery inspired by Native American art and symbolism. Wheeler became an important figure in 20th-Century American art, developing a distinctive style that combined bold colors, simplified forms, and spiritual themes drawn from Indigenous American cultures. He was associated with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the 1930s, where he created murals and prints that reflected both modernist influences and traditional motifs. Over time, Wheeler’s work evolved toward more abstract compositions while still maintaining references to ritual, mythology, and nature. His art is recognized for its rhythmic shapes and vibrant palettes, and he remains an influential figure in American modernist painting and printmaking. "Hello Steve" reflects his blending of Cubist, Surrealist, and Native American Space Movement styles, particularly Northwest Coast Indian Art, as well as examples of his cryptic typography.
