This large signed lithograph by artist G. Harvey, titled "Pike Place Public Market," depicts a lovely turn-of-the-century cafe/boutique adorned with colorful burnt orange valances and looking out onto a street bustling with life - people attending to errands, florals in full bloom, and horses at the ready. You can almost breathe in the scent.
An American artist, Harvey (born Gerald Harvey Jones 1933-2017) is renowned for his Western and Americana art and is celebrated for his storytelling ability, often evoking nostalgia and a sense of place in his pieces. His work often features vibrant colors, dramatic lighting, and intricate details that invite viewer interaction. An American traditionalist whose career spanned five decades, Harvey's works were sought out by Lyndon Johnson, Margaret Thatcher and Texas Governor John Connally and have been showcased throughout the world, including the White House and the Embassy of the United States in Moscow. This print is beautifully matted and framed and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) issued by Somerset House Publishing. Produced in 1998, it's numbered #128/1950 and features a landscape orientation measuring 31 inches tall by 41.25 inches wide.
A Texas native, Harvey has said he was inspired to draw western scenes from his grandfather's stories of living on the Texas Frontier.
According to an online obituary, G. Harvey (Gerald Harvey Jones, 1933-2017) was "known for paintings closely linked in mood and subject matter to Edouard Cortes [1882-1962]. G Harvey creates romanticized street scenes of turn of the century towns in America. Rain slick streets reflect urban lights, and the weather is obviously cold. He grew up in the rugged hills north of San Antonio, Texas from where herds of longhorn cattle were once driven up dusty trails to the Kansas railheads. His grandfather was a trail boss at 18 and helped create an American legend for his grandson. So the American West is not only the artist's inspiration but his birthright. Harvey's early interest in sketching and drawing slowly evolved into a passion for painting in oils. He graduated cum laude from North Texas State University."
