This vintage fired raku art pottery vase features an exquisite combination of turquoise, jade, and aquamarine colors and showcases a unique crackle pattern and pinched jagged edges around the top rim. The vase stands 5 inches tall and measures 5.5 inches wide with an opening hole 2.5" across. Signed by the artist, the piece is infused with themes of art, beachy vibes, happiness, and good luck. With its Asian-inspired style and art pottery production technique, this piece is a beautiful addition for those seeking a unique and inspirational decorative item for their home or office decor or meditative space. Its colors impart a beachy laid back vibe and its design is truly one-of-a-kind with its distinctive white crackle glaze at the top, its texturized green glaze below and the pinch points that make it the unique star that steals the show.
Did you know:
Raku pottery is created by removing pieces from the kiln while they are glowing red hot and placing them into containers filled with combustible materials, creating intense reduction atmospheres and unique glaze effects. The glaze cracks intentionally due to rapid thermal shock and the smoke from the firing process often fills these cracks (technically known as craquelure) with black carbon.
Because of the porous nature of the clay and the firing technique, raku pottery is generally not airtight and is intended for decorative purposes rather than functional use.
These pieces are unique, handcrafted artworks where the unpredictability of the fire determines the final patterns and colors. During firing, the sudden temperature change causes the glaze to cool and shrink faster than the clay body, creating the fine cracks in a process called crazing. As the piece sits in the smoky reduction chamber, carbon from the burning materials is pulled deep into these cracks, making the dark lines visible against the white glaze.
Remember, the crackling is a desired intention effect not a defect.
Again, truly one-of-a-kind and a sight to behold.
