A dramatic and elegant pair, ideal for traditional, Hollywood Regency, Chinoiserie, or maximalist interiors. Pair of Chinese Export Famille Rose / Rose Medallion Porcelain Vases with Stands
Late Qing to Republic Period (circa 1880s–1940s)
A striking and highly decorative matched pair of Chinese export porcelain vases in the vibrant famille rose (Rose Medallion variation) palette, lavishly decorated with dense polychrome enamels against a rich gilt ground. Each vase is Quadrangular (four-sided and faceted) in baluster form, with applied gilt guardian lion (foo dog) mask handles at the shoulders and flared square necks.
The bodies are elaborately ornamented with reserves of florals, birds, butterflies, and garden motifs, framed by intricate borders and scrolling gilt decoration. The overall effect is bold, colorful, and visually dramatic — a hallmark of late 19th to early 20th century export porcelain designed for Western interiors.
The vases are raised on matching square pedestal stands (riser bases with short feet), decorated en suite with floral borders, gilded accents, and complementary enameling — enhancing their presentation and height, ideal for mantel, console, or entry display.
Marks
The vases & bases bear a red overglaze four-character seal mark reading 大清乾隆年製 (“Made in the Qianlong reign of the Great Qing”), referencing the Qianlong reign.
This is an apocryphal mark, commonly used on later decorative export wares from the late Qing through Republic period.
Period
Late Qing Dynasty to Republic Era
Circa 1880s–1940s
Produced in the long-established porcelain center of Jingdezhen for export markets.
Style & Use
These stunning vases reflect the height of Western fascination with Chinese decorative arts during the Victorian and early 20th century periods. The Quadrangular baluster form with gilt lion handles and heavy gold ground decoration is typical of export garnitures or statement mantel pieces.
