Beautiful large Japanese printed and partially painted silk scroll after the painting "Carp Leaping" (Koi-no-taki-nobori) by Masayuki (雅幸). This is a classic motif in Japanese art symbolizing perseverance, success, and professional advancement. It is based on the legend that a carp that swims upstream and leaps over the 'Dragon Gate' will transform into a dragon. It is a beautiful example of Nihonga (traditional Japanese-style painting), often displayed to bring good fortune and courage to a household. Ink and paint on silk. Beautifully mounted on silk. Bone style plastic roller ends. Paper on back. Japan, Showa Era, c. 1950-1980s. Very Good condition - minimal age wear, minimal foxing and staining, clean. This scroll can be trimmed and framed.
