Showa Era Japanese printed monochrome scroll depicting Amida Nyorai (the Buddha of Infinite Light), the sculpture of the Heian period (12th century), shown in the 'Raigō-in' mudra, a gesture of welcoming souls into the Western Pure Land. The print of the Buddha statue is circa 1900-1940s. Some age wear on back indicates that it was mounted on silk around 1940-1950s, maybe earlier. Signed and dated in ink: "October 8, Showa 51, 1976. Kubo Tsugunari (久保 継成)" by Tsugunari Kubo (1936–2021), a prominent Japanese Buddhist leader and scholar, best known as the leader of the Reiyukai movement, who was deeply involved in Buddhist art and philosophy. Ink on paper. Beautifully mounted on silk. Lacquered brown wood roller. Japan, 1900-1976. Excellent to Very Good condition - some age wear on the print, some foxing on back, minimal age wear on the mount, clean. This scroll can be trimmed and framed.
