Our great-great grandparents would have used this wooden scuttle to carry coal to a fireplace grate or stove. There the lumps would sit until someone pulled up the little attached shovel to scoop out the dusty, dirty stuff as one’s room got chilly. The slanted front allowed easy access and often, as in this case, offered a removable metal liner to hold the coal.
Fortunately for us, all that fuss has passed. Today such a box provides charming storage for kindling, fire starters, or even magazines.
Constructed from wood with a carved panel on the door and a shaped handle for lifting, this box has a metal liner plus a slot on the back to store the included scoop…just in case.
Dimension: Height with scoop in place is 18.5"
