There are lamps… and then there are lamps that look as though Napoleon himself might have pointed at them and said, “Yes. Those. Put them in the palace.”
This striking pair of French Empire bronze-mounted Verdi marble cassolette lamps — dating to the spirited revival era of the 1920s — carry all the theatrical swagger of early 19th-century grandeur, but with just enough Jazz Age confidence to make them utterly irresistible.
Let’s begin at the base, because that’s where the story really starts. Deep green Verdi marble — rich, swirling, dramatic — forms the urn-shaped bodies, each one cradled within gilt bronze mounts that gleam like polished medals. The marble is not shy. It commands attention with bold veining and a color that feels plucked from an Alpine mountainside at dusk. Above and around it, finely cast ormolu scrollwork encircles the form like golden laurel wreaths.
And then — ah yes — the rams.
Magnificent gilt bronze ram’s heads anchor each side, their curling horns projecting with muscular authority. In Empire design, the ram was no accident. It symbolized strength, power, virility — everything Napoleon wanted his furniture to whisper (or shout) about the state of France. These aren’t decorative afterthoughts. They are sculptural statements, gripping the urn form as though guarding it from lesser décor.
The cassolettes themselves reference classical antiquity — originally ornamental urns meant to hold incense or perfume. By the early 20th century, designers in France were reviving Empire motifs with renewed enthusiasm, transforming these once ceremonial vessels into electric lamps. The result? History illuminated.
From each marble urn rises a fluted bronze column, dignified and architectural, supporting a double-arm light fitting with dangling pull chains that feel satisfyingly mechanical — the kind that click on with a decisive authority. Even unlit, they glow with quiet opulence. Once illuminated, they become something else entirely — pools of warm light reflecting off gilded bronze and dark green stone, casting shadows worthy of a Parisian salon.
Standing as a pair, they possess symmetry that pleases the eye in that deeply reassuring way only classical design can achieve. Place them on a mantel, flanking a console, or commanding either side of a grand sofa, and suddenly the room behaves better. It straightens its posture.
These are not merely 1920s lamps. They are Empire revival declarations — bronze, marble, and mythology working together in harmonious authority. They do not ask politely for admiration.
They assume it.
