A caryatid is an ancient sculpted female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or pillar supporting a vessel on her head. Historically, caryatids represented "maidens" or priestesses who participated in ritual dance for the goddess Artemis.
This lovely piece was most likely created to be used as a decorative column on a building façade, for supporting a lamp or was possibly employed in a fireplace - all these practices became popular from the 1500's to 1800's in Europe.
The classical or neoclassical style is evident. The figure has structural cracks, which is common for antique carved wooden pieces - please see photos. The cracks themselves add 'character' to the piece. Total weight approx. 55 lbs.
Your purchase will support The Green Chair Project, a home-furnishing nonprofit organization that supports families in need and in crisis.
