It was used from the 16th century onwards to light fires. The bottom and top rims are made of etched crystal, used for striking matches. This crystal jar with a silver handle and lid is a 19th-century matchbox and is Dutch. The silver is Dutch hallmarked with the old "Sword" used between 1814 and 1906. The maker's mark is G.F. Bauer, Utrecht, and this mark was used between 1862 and 1868. Therefore, the date of this jar is 1862-1868. The matchbox shows signs of wear, see details in the pictures It measures 11.5 cm high and, with the handle, approximately 13 cm 7.5 cm diagonally. It weighs 291 grams. See less
