This is a truly one-of-a-kind console that folds out into a games table with storage for game boards, cards, and pieces inside. The tabletop sits upon four large carved giltwood ram's heads at each corner with brass rings in their mouths. They are balanced upon rounded saber legs that terminate in large carved giltwood hooves. Folded closed, the table is a perfect console size, measuring 18" x 36" x 29". When opened, the table top converts to a square 36" x 36" surface and maintains the 29" height. The table is a golden oak bookmatched veneer on a solid wood base.
The age of the giltwood carvings is evident, with some of the red primer layer showing where the gilding has worn off, and even some small spots of raw wood showing beneath it. The craftsmanship is evident in the texture, detail, and dimensionality of the ram heads and hooves.
In our research, we have found nothing similar to these tables. We believe the set was custom-crafted in the mid-20th century and never produced in mass. It is signed 'Sloane' on the underside, which may indicate it was a prototype for W. & J. Sloane, but there are no other maker's marks to confirm that.
We also have a matching coffee table, a smaller version of this one. It will be available for sale soon and sold separately.

The gilding on the ram's heads and hooves is worn, as mentioned in the descriptions and shown in the photos. An area of the finish in the center of the tabletop (when folded into its smaller, console shape) is worn and beginning to flake slightly. This wear is visible with close inspection. See the area to the left of the penny in the last photo. less
