Discover the vibrant essence of Caribbean life with these original lithographs by Alexandre Minguet (1937–1996), the celebrated French artist who made Saint-Martin his muse. Hand-signed in pencil by the artist and numbered from a limited edition, these eight pieces showcase Minguet's signature style: bold, expressive colors and whimsical forms depicting serene beaches at sunset with a quaint house and distant boats, lush gardens bursting with tropical flora under a stormy skys, lively harbor scene with figures and sailboats, charming village house nestled among trees and stone walls, and winding path through a colorful rural landscapes. Each is printed on high-quality paper as a 'lithographie originale,' and captures the joy and luminosity of island scenery, blending European modernism with tropical flair.
All pieces are professionally framed in wooden frames with green mats, enhancing their vivid hues. The frame measures approximately 10x12 inches, and the prints are approximately 5x7 inches. In excellent vintage condition, with no fading or damage noted. A rare opportunity to own a piece of French-Caribbean art history—ideal for collectors or as a statement decor item. The prints were purchased by the seller at the Minguet Gallery on St. Martin circa 1987.
About Minguet: He relocated from France to the Caribbean, founded a gallery in Saint-Martin, and became known for his evocative portrayals of local landscapes. This work exemplifies his ability to infuse everyday scenes with poetic energy, making it a perfect addition to coastal, eclectic, or modern interiors. Minguet's relevance lies in his role as a bridge between European modernism and Caribbean regional art. He contributed to the cultural scene in Saint-Martin, where his gallery (Galerie Minguet) became a hub for local and visiting artists. His art celebrates the joy and simplicity of island existence, making it appealing to collectors interested in tropical or expatriate French art. While not a global superstar like some contemporaries, his works are collected in Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean, appearing in galleries, private collections, and occasional auctions. He embodies the "artist-exile" archetype, similar to figures such as Paul Gauguin, but with a focus on contemporary island motifs.
Minguet's significance stems from his ability to capture the ephemeral beauty of Saint-Martin's landscapes with a childlike whimsy and bold use of color. His lithographs, like these, are original prints pulled in small editions, emphasizing accessibility while retaining artistic integrity. His works are primarily impressionist in style, with strong influences from related movements like Fauvism (bold, vibrant color use) and elements of expressionism or post-impressionism, rather than pure abstraction. They symbolize a fusion of cultures—French technique meeting Caribbean vibrancy—and often evoke themes of serenity, nature, and human connection to the environment. In the broader art world, his works contribute to the narrative of 20th-century regionalism, shaping perceptions of tropical art beyond stereotypes. Collectors value them for their decorative appeal, cultural authenticity, and as affordable entry points into French-Caribbean art. His death in 1996 has led to a modest posthumous appreciation, particularly in markets like France and the U.S. Northeast.

I would personally remount on a more modern frame, refresh the matting, and upgrade the glass to glare- and UV-resistant glass. That said, they are all ready to be mounted on the wall. less
