Born in New York, Charles Green Shaw studied at Yale University and a year at Columbia University. While starting off as a freelance writer, Shaw later became interested in art and studied under Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League in New York. He quickly embraced abstraction in his art and went on to exhibit at several well known New York galleries. In 1937, Shaw helped found the group American Abstract Artists and was on the advisory board of the Museum of Modern Art from 1937 to 1941. Shaw's works are in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, as well as others. See less
