Early 19th century Swedish armoire constructed of pine and dated 1823, featuring its original hand-painted finish. The cabinet displays a deep red to burgundy background with four richly painted front panels and additional decoration along the canted sides, each adorned with floral motifs incorporating vases, bouquets, ribbons, and garlands. Above the doors, a painted monogram “B.R.” and the date 1823 suggest this armoire may have originally served as a wedding or dowry piece. Subtle carved detailing frames the crown and front doors, adding refinement to the overall form. Raised on turned front feet, the armoire was originally built in sections, with a visible seam along the back reflecting traditional construction methods ("break-down armoire"). The interior retains original hand-carved hooks in the upper section and two interior shelves along with two small lower drawers. The original lock and key remain present and function with some resistance; may be best to use key as a pull only. Old dried wormhole activity, along with surface wear, scratches, cracks, and finish wear, reflect the cabinet’s age and history without impacting stability or function. The skirt and feet show a complementary later paint application that harmonizes with the original decoration. This armoire has been restored, is strong and stable, and ready for use, offering a rare and highly decorative example of Swedish folk art craftsmanship.
